Looming International Steel Tariffs Delayed One Month

President Trump is pushing the deadline for his promised steel tariff sanctions on the European Union, Canada, and Mexico to  to June 1. Trump did reach preliminary agreements with with Australia, Argentina and Brazil ahead of the Monday night deadline. U.S. trading partners are negotiating to avoid the proposed 25% tariff on steel and 10% on aluminum by establishing quotas that will restrain imports. South Korea will be exempt from the tariffs, according to the White House. Read More.

DBIA ALLEGHENIES INAUGURAL EVENT A ROUSING SUCCESS

DBIA Liberty’s Alleghenies Chapter kick-off Thursday, April 5th brought together contractors, architects, consultants, lawyers, and insurance professionals to learn about and celebrate the growth of Design-Build in the Allegheny region. The inaugural event, hosted at The Chadwick event center in Wexford, PA, drew a crowd of over 100 professionals from the area’s Design-Build community. Dan Adley, CEO of KTA-Tator, Inc. welcomed the full house and introduced the theme of the event, “The Next Wave of Prosperity is Upon Us… Are You Ready?”. Mike Arnold, Vice President of Construction Management Services at Reynolds Construction, LLC took it from there, opening the discussion with information about the Design-Build project delivery method; DBIA’s organizational structure; what led to the establishment of the Alleghenies Chapter; and the benefits of joining the new chapter.

There were two panel discussions, moderated by Gene Boyer, Vice President of Business Development at Nello Construction: PENNDOT Rapid Bridge Replacement, and Allegheny Health Network Community (HNC) Cancer Centers. The PENNDOT panel focused on the state’s aging infrastructure and the benefits of leveraging Design-Build, public-private partnerships, and pre-manufactured components to construct Pennsylvania’s next generation infrastructure. The AHN Cancer Center Panel discussed the progress of this fast-tracked Design-Build project, and the methods they are employing to achieve their 11-month project completion goal.

After the panels, Micah Sayles, Project Manager at Civil and Environmental Consultants explained the importance and benefits of DBIA membership, closing with instructions on how to become a member. At the conclusion of the presentations, attendees took the opportunity to eat, drink, and network.

The government agency overseeing a $1.2- billion expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Manhattan’s far West Side bid its two-city-block-size effort as a design-build job. The winning design-build team—led by Turner Construction and Lendlease, with TVS Design as lead design partner, brought their construction professionals together with engineers TVS, Magnusson Klemencic Associates and JBP Engineering, quickly found ways to improve the structure while reducing schedule and costs.
